Product Details

This is an early Meiji Era (c. 1870) antique Japanese Samurai warrior doll done in a soft sculpture with silk kimonos over a firm base. He has a wooden head and gofun (crushed oyster shell) finished face along with carved wooden hands. He represents the bannerman of a Samurai General or Shogun. He is kneeling position with head turned downward in reverence to his shogun master. He would have been holding a banner of the samurai clan he represents. Here he holds a spear. The full set of armor is very realistically detailed.

Check the detail work on his hand woven tabi shoes (pictures 7 & 8) as well as his hand carved wooden hands (pictures 9 & 10).

Having been in storage for over 150 years, with the exception of minor signs of past use, he remains in very good condition. In kneeling position he measures about 9" tall by 7" wide (23 x 18 cm).
